Kanada hatte 2011 1.137 Gemeinden, die den Status einer Stadt , einer Stadt oder eines Dorfes hatten. Diese Liste zeigt die 100 größten dieser Gemeinden nach Landfläche in Quadratkilometern zum Zeitpunkt der Volkszählung 2011 .

Die geografisch riesigen Städte in Quebec  – drei davon größer als die gesamte Provinz Prince Edward Island  – wurden in den 1990er Jahren geschaffen, als die Provinzregierung einige riesige unorganisierte Gebiete ( territoires non organisés ) zu selbstverwalteten Gemeinden hinzufügte , die sich auf eine einzige konzentrierten dominantes urbanes Zentrum und umgeben von ausgedehnten Waldgebieten und dünn besiedelten Weiten.

Die geografisch riesigen Städte in Ontario wurden in den 1990er Jahren geschaffen, als die Provinzregierung einige Bezirke und regionale Gemeinden in selbstverwaltete ländliche, einstufige Gemeinden umwandelte , die sich auf ein einziges dominantes städtisches Zentrum und die ehemaligen Vororte und relativ nahe gelegenen Satellitenstädte konzentrierten und Dörfer, einschließlich großer Landstriche.
